Lesson One

The Pillar That
Held Up the Sky

Not what it looked like.
What it was for.

A hooded apprentice stands motionless in a stone temple corridor, facing a distant cyan light.

A field note

Backbones hold things up.

Before they taught me anything else, they made me learn this shape. This is called a Djed. Most people who've seen it don't know what it is — but it's everywhere in Egyptian temples, tombs, even jewelry. It's usually read as a backbone. Specifically, the backbone of Osiris.

That's the part they wanted me to understand first — not what it looked like. What it was for. Stability. That's the word they kept using. I didn't understand why that mattered so much.

Not yet.

Some rituals aren't symbolic.

A cloaked hand traces the carved grooves of a Djed pillar symbol on a temple wall.
